After selecting the four Baltimore composers, we will pair them with young and rising Baltimore guitarists. We also pair them with Baltimore mentors who will work with them to get the works ready for world-premiere. Therefore, “Made in Baltimore.”

Guitarists CONNIE SHEU and ADAM PETTIT have engaged audiences across the United States, Canada, Mexico and Europe as soloists and chamber musicians. As the SHEU PETTIT DUO, they have premiered and recorded works by Andrew York, Matthew Denman, Ronald Pearl, Michael Karmon, and Ssu-Yu Huang. While deeply committed to playing new music for guitar duo, the SHEU PETTIT DUO also performs seminal works of the repertoire, including music of Leo Brouwer, Clarice Assad, Joaquín Rodrigo, and Ida Presti. This season, the duo gave a performance of Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco's Well-Tempered Guitars, Op. 199, a groundbreaking work for two guitars modeled after Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier with a prelude and fugue in each major and minor key.

Grammy-winning guitarist Scott Tennant says of the duo, "Connie Sheu and Adam Pettit think and play with a singular mind. Their combined mastery of the guitar and profound musicality make the Sheu Pettit Duo a dynamic musical force which needs to be heard." Composer Steven Gates comments, “They are each a consummate guitarist possessing a wealth of technical mastery and expressive power, and at the same time, they are chamber musicians in the truest sense of the word.”

Adam and Connie first met as students in the Pepe Romero master classes held at the University of Southern California during the summer of 2004. They have been featured artists and clinicians for a number of guitar societies and festivals and are both on the classical guitar faculty at the Pasadena Conservatory of Music.

CONNIE SHEU

Dr. Connie Sheu is a dynamic guitarist, dedicated teacher, and ardent advocate of classical guitar. In demand as both a soloist and chamber musician, her playing has been hailed by the New York Sun as “excellent, ruminative... scholarly." According to Classical Guitar Magazine, “Her debut recording displays, without a doubt, her talents as a concert artist.”

Past performances have brought her to Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall, 92nd St Y, Merkin Hall, Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall; venues in Moldova, Italy, Hungary; and across the United States. She is a frequent performer on various concert series and music festivals, and has most recently appeared at the Women in Guitar Festival, New York Guitar Festival, and Guitar Foundation of America International Convention.

Connie studied U.S. History and Music at Columbia University, and earned a Master of Music from the Juilliard School. She completed her Doctorate of Musical Arts at the University of Southern California under William Kanengiser. She also studied under scholarship at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana with Oscar Ghiglia in Siena, Italy. Connie serves as General Manager for the Guitar Foundation of America and teaches at the Pasadena Conservatory of Music and Moreno Valley College.

ADAM PETTIT

Dr. Adam Pettit‘s performances have been characterized by the Los Angeles Times as “meditative,” and “brilliantly colored, articulated and focused.” He has performed at a number of established venues including the American Guitar Society, KPFK’s Global Village, LACMA’s Sundays Live, and the Los Angeles Bach Festival.

Adam is also an experienced chamber musician, collaborating with a number of ensembles in Southern California. Past projects and appearances include the Helios Guitar Quartet, Santa Barbara Master Chorale, the South Coast Symphony, and the Orange County Guitar Orchestra.

Adam earned his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore in the studio of Julian Gray. He then continued his studies as a Teaching Assistant at the University of Southern California, where he earned his Doctorate of Musical Arts degree under the tutelage of William Kanengiser and James Smith. He serves on the guitar faculty at the Pasadena Conservatory of Music and Orange Coast College.

Performance Anxiety is a problem that anyone who engages in a creative activity in front of an audience has probably experienced. For some it may occur as an occasional, situation specific spike in what is otherwise their normal level of excitement and anticipation. For a great many others, though, it is an ongoing struggle that can make performing at any level an intensely difficult thing to do. For far too many skilled and passionate artists, it can become an impossible obstacle to hurdle if steps are not taken to develop the ability to keep it at a manageable level and not allow it to interfere with doing what they love.

This presentation will include a discussion of the root causes of performance anxiety and its psychological and physiological aspects, along with descriptions of strategies that you can use to work on developing the ability to manage your own anxiety.

The GFA International Concert Artist Competition attracts the very best musicians from around the world, and the winner’s tour concert is always the highlight of our season. Thanks to the generous help of the University of Delaware, we are able to offer this year’s winner’s tour concert free to the public! Last year’s competition winner, Xavier Jara, hails from Minnesota, and is the first winner from the United States since Martha Master’s won in 2000. Xavier has been studying with Judicael Perroy, and is yet another example of the incredible artistry emerging from his French studio (last year’s GFA touring artist, 2016 GFA winner Thibaut Garcia, also studied with Judicael). In addition to giving a masterclass at the University of Delaware the same day as the concert, we’ll be presenting a masterclass with Xavier at Presbyterian Church of the Covenant on 4/20.

Perhaps in our longest bid for an artist, we’ve been trying to arrange for this amazing musician to play for Wilmington Classical Guitar since 2011! Now finally, Wilmington Classical Guitar is pleased to present GFA Winner Thomas Viloteau in a concert and masterclass. Thomas is a prizewinner of numerous international guitar competitions, including first prizes in the prestigious Guitar Foundation of America International Concert Artist Competetion in 2006, and the Francisco Tárrega Competition – the oldest event of its kind – in 2012.

Thomas has recently completed a doctorate degree at Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY and has just begun teaching at the Peabody Institute of Music of The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. He’ll be bringing his considerable teaching chops to Wilmington in a masterclass earlier on October 20 (see below). MASTERCLASS
10/20/18: Thomas Viloteau will be teaching a masterclass in the afternoon, Saturday October 20 at 1:30 pm in the West Room of Presbyterian Church of the Covenant. The masterclass is free to observe and open to the public, but registration is required. Register as an auditor to sit in and hear what Mr. Viloteau has to teach our guest performers, or register as a performer for your chance to perform for Thomas and have him critique your performance (a small tuition fee applies). Register as either an auditor or performer in our Online Store.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Thomas Viloteau‘s first concert was in his home country of France only a year after he began his studies, in front of an audience of 200 people. Since that concert, Thomas has played in some of the best venues through out the United States of America, Canada, Mexico, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Norway, Great Britain, Taiwan and Puerto Rico.

Born into a family of fine arts enthusiasts, Thomas took his first lesson at the age of twelve. Although a late start for an internationally recognized musician, inspired by listening to Naxos recordings of other prominent classical musicians, Thomas decided at the outset of his career that he wanted to record such a CD too. Eager to learn as much as he could about his instrument, he immediately went on to study at an international level, moving from Barcelona, to Paris, San Francisco, London, Tucson, Rochester and Montréal seeking advice from some of the leading professors like Alvaro Pierri, Alberto Ponce, Judicaël Perroy, Tom Patterson, Roland Dyens, Nicholas Goluses, Paul O’Dette and Marc Teicholz.

Equally as talented as a performer, Thomas has also proven his versatile abilities as a competitor. Thomas has placed in numerous international competitions, taking first prize in the Segovia Competition, Mottola, Ville d’Antony, Sernancelhe and in 2006, only nine years after he started playing, the renown Guitar Foundation of America International Competition which allowed him to record his first CD with the label Naxos. In the summer of 2012, after years away from competitions, he played for the first time at the Francisco Tàrrega Competition in Benicàssim, the oldest event of its kind, where he won the prestigious 1st prize. In December of 2015 he was the first guitarist to win the Arthur W. Foote Award from the Harvard Musical Association in Boston, a prize given each year to the best musician in the top music schools and conservatories in the United States.

Always willing to push his passion for classical guitar further, Thomas has recently finished writing a book about the modern advanced techniques of the classical guitar. “In the Black Box – Technique(s) of the Classical Guitar” is based on his own experiments, thoughts and those of his teachers and contemporaries. With this book, Thomas has created a tool in helping others get to a point that he was able to accelerate to so quickly.

Thomas Viloteau has released recordings with Naxos, La Ma de Guido and Mel Bay. In 2015 he produced his own record “Dances Through the Centuries,” which includes the world premiere of the Suite Brasileira 3 by Sergio Assad, dedicated to Thomas and commissioned with a grant from the Northern Trust/Piper Enrichment Award.

Thomas Viloteau has lived in Paris, Barcelona, San Francisco, New York City, London, Tucson, and Montréal. He recently completed his Doctoral Studies at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY, and has begun teaching at the Peabody Institute of Music of The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. He only uses Savarez strings and plays on guitars made by Greg Smallman and Bastien Burlot.

Four years at Phillips Exeter Academy, where he studied with Bob Squires and Apostolos Paraskevas, led to to four years at the Oberlin Conservatory, where he studied with Steve Aron, which led to two years at the San Francisco Conservatory, where he studied with David Tanenbaum.

In the middle of his Oberlin tenure Brendan spent a very formative year studying flamenco guitar in the cities of Granada (where he studied at Carmen de las Ceuvas) and Cordoba, in the Andalusian region of Spain. He sometimes thinks about the advice he got from his last teacher in Spain, which was to “Stay in Spain and play flamenco, do not return to the states and study classical guitar.” Brendan had come to realize that to play flamenco is to live it completely, and was not willing to give up his life in the states, or put aside his growing passion for the classical guitar – he does not regret returning, but there is a lingering sense of melancholy. Perhaps one day he’ll return to Spain.

After graduating in 2008 from the SF Conservatory with a Master’s degree, Brendan went on to win prizes in 8 consecutive competitions in the US and Canada, including 1st prizes in the Louisville and Rosario festivals. Brendan plays on a guitar made by David Pace.
