A native of South Korea, Yenne Lee is a classical guitarist who is not shy to play other genre music. By arranging and playing popular songs, she wants to expand the audience base of the instrument, hoping that would lead to more people learning the classical guitar.

Her first album, Beautiful (2016), features her own arrangements of popular songs from the 1970's. Her second album which will be released in 2018 features her own classical interpretation of some jazz standards. The first arrangement she completed for this jazz album was Autumn Leaves, which she made a YouTube video for Guitar Salon International’s YouTube channel in 2017. The video has gotten over 4 million views as of August 2018.

She has a strong background in classical music. She recorded for Sony Classical Korea as the first guitar of Botticelli Guitar Quartet in 2008. She received a doctorate from Manhattan School of Music under the tutelage of the Grammy-winning musician David Starobin. Her dissertation was on Fernando Sor’s fantasies and their Romantic features. She was a prizewinner at the Indiana International Guitar Competition in 2013 and at several competitions back in Korea.

Her recent performances include the New York Guitar Seminar at Mannes, Vietnamese American Classical Guitar Society, and Korean American Guitar Society.

Their performances are all the more sought after in recent years as they have become more selective about their engagements and less-easily seen. Sergio has used the time to compose a series of brilliant scores and to become the guitar world’s most sought-after composer. Odair, meanwhile, has enthralled audiences with a series of solo performances and recordings that have received rave reviews.”

Baltimore guitarist Jeremy Lyons has been a friend of the Wilmington Classical Guitar since the very beginning. Jeremy performed in our first concert in 2010, and we’ve been pleased to feature him twice more as a soloist, in 2014 at the Music School of Delaware, and in 2015 at West Chester University. Since that first performance with us Jeremy has completed his Master’s and Doctoral degrees with the esteemed maestro Manuel Barrueco at the Peabody Conservatory, composed music for mixed ensembles such as the Pique Collective, and completed torturous training to become an ultra (100 mile) runner.

Jeremy is joined in this concert by accomplished soprano Lisa Perry, who perform together regularly. Lisa performs frequently in the greater Baltimore area with various ensembles and is currently pursuing her Doctor of Musical Arts degree at Peabody Conservatory.

Jeremy and Lisa will perform a mixture of new and old works, written or arranged for voice and guitar, including German Lieder, Spanish canciónes, modern art song, and works from the bel canto operatic canon.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Jeremy Lyons
A native of West Chester, Pennsylvania, Jeremy Lyons began studying the classical guitar at a young age with his father Glenn Lyons, who founded the classical guitar program at West Chester University of Pennsylvania. In addition to the guitar, Jeremy studied the cello with Ovidiu Marinescu and performed as a member of several orchestras and ensembles.

Jeremy received a BM in guitar performance (Summa Cum Laude) from the Florida State University, where he studied with Bruce Holzman, and holds a MM in Guitar Performance and Pedagogy, a MM in Musicology, and a DMA all from the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University, where he studied with Manuel Barrueco.

While attending Florida State University, he also studied the viola da gamba with professor Pamela Andrews, the Renaissance lute with Anthony Rooley, and the gu-zheng (an ancient Chinese zither) with Haiqiong Deng. He was a member of the FSU Viols, the FSU Chinese Ensemble, and he regularly accompanied the FSU Early Music Ensembles, under the direction of Dr. Jeffery Kite-Powell. Jeremy also participated in the Early Music Ensembles at the Peabody Conservatory where he performed with the Peabody Renaissance Ensemble and the Peabody Consort, both directed by Mark Cudek, and the Peabody consort of Viols, directed by John Moran.

As a guitarist, Jeremy gives solo recitals throughout the United States and he has also appeared as a soloist with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Marin Alsop, the Warminster symphony orchestra, and the Tallahassee symphony orchestra. Jeremy continues to perform on viola da gamba, lute, and Baroque guitar, and he regularly appears with his duo partner Soprano, Lisa Perry. While maintaining an active performing career, Jeremy is the current guitar instructor at Artist music education center in Perry Hall Maryland, and he also teaches guitar at the Levine School of Music in Washington D.C.

An advocate for contemporary music, Jeremy regularly writes music, collaborates with other composers, and enthusiastically participates in music that connects to a variety of audience members. He is a member of two Baltimore-based contemporary music ensembles: Mind on Fire and the Pique Collective. These ensembles explore the many sounds, sensations, experiences, and possibilities that arise from a performance, held in a public space, that invites the audience to immediately react and interact with the show that they attend.

Jeremy also delivers lectures concerning classical guitar history and the many influences that effect the repertoire of music available to the modern day guitarist. His research interests include pedagogical approaches to teaching the guitar, contemporary guitar literature, and the perception of a modern day guitarist as a musician.

Lisa Perry
Praised for her “pure, gleaming timbre” (Baltimore Sun) and “confident, penetrating account of lines” (Washington Post), soprano Lisa Perry has become a familiar face within the mid-Atlantic music scene. She has been seen on the operatic stage as the Mad Mermaid in Ophelia Forever (Amy Beth Kirsten), le feu, princesse, and rossignol in L’enfant et les sortileges (Maurice Ravel), Lady with the Hand Mirror in Postcard from Morocco (Dominick Argento), Ladybird Johnson in Camelot Requiem (world premiere; Joshua Bornfield) and the title role in Lakmé (Léo Delibes). Having a passion for contemporary repertoire, Lisa has been featured with new-music ensembles such as the Great Noise Ensemble (Washington, D.C.), SONAR New Music Ensemble (Baltimore, MD), Rhymes with Opera (New York, NY), Figaro Project (Baltimore), and the Peabody Camerata (Baltimore). She has held residencies with the Thompson Street Opera Company, PARMA Festival, New Music on the Point, Launch Festival, SUNY Fredonia, and was a New Music Fellow with SongFest in Los Angeles, CA. As is a founding member of Baltimore’s acclaimed LUNAR Ensemble Lisa has performed throughout Maryland, New York, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania with critical acclaim. In addition, Lisa regularly performs throughout the mid-Atlantic with her duo partner, award-winning guitarist Jeremy Lyons.

Lisa received her Bachelor’s Degree in Music Composition and Theory from Michigan State University in 2008 and her Master’s Degree from the Peabody Institute in Voice Performance in 2011. She is currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Peabody under the direction of Phyllis Bryn-Julson.

Our very first concert at Presbyterian Church of the Covenant in October of 2016 was an amazing success, in no small part due to the enormous talent of our featured artist, Alec Holcomb. His assured and virtuosic playing easily won us over, and his recent arrangements of a number of pieces by Isaac Albéniz captured our hearts. We were so blown away that we couldn’t wait any longer to have him back.

Since performing for us in 2016, Alec has completed his undergraduate degree at Curtis Institute of Music, and begun his masters studies at San Francisco Conservatory with Judicaël Perroy (teacher of GFA winner’s Thibaut Garcia and Xaviar Jara). We can’t wait to see what he’s learned in the past 2 years.

Works by Albeniz, Jose, Assad, and Cassado.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Recognized as one of the most exciting young guitarists of his generation, Alec Holcomb has delighted audiences across the U.S., performed on National Public Radio, and earned the first prize in numerous guitar competitions. Alec’s virtuosity, attention to musical detail, and mastery at fully capturing the expressive range of the instrument takes the listener on a musical journey through a broad spectrum of the world’s greatest compositions.

In Alec’s family, love for the guitar is a tradition. Both his grandfather and father played varying styles including rock, fingerstyle, and classical. Their influence led Alec at the age of six to request lessons from his father in classical guitar pedagogy. Alec’s commitment to guitar excellence was evident from the beginning. His rapid progress led to being accepted in John Johns’ studio at Vanderbilt University at the age of 11. Soon thereafter, Alec participated in his first masterclass with Christopher Parkening – a seminal moment. It was then that Alec committed to pursuing classical guitar professionally.

At 14, Alec’s musicianship flourished under the guidance of Dr. Andrew Zohn. In the years that followed, he won several high school division competitions across the U.S., including the Parkening Young Guitarist Competition (2012). Alec was also featured on NPR’s From the Top (2012), and was selected as a Young Arts Finalist (2013).

In 2017, Alec graduated with a Bachelor of Music in Guitar Performance at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, studying with David Starobin and Jason Vieaux. While at Curtis, Alec has appeared on WHYY in Philadelphia, played an array of concerts, and continued his participation in guitar competitions. Recent first prize wins include the East Carolina Guitar Competition (2014) and the Philadelphia Classical Guitar Competition (2015). Alec received 4th prize at the renowned Parkening International Guitar Competition (2015). He earned 2nd place at the Columbus State University Guitar Competition (2016). Alec was a Finalist in the JoAnn Falletta International Guitar Concerto Competition (2016). He won the BorGuitar International Award (1st place) in the BorGuitar Festival Competition in Italy (2016). Most recently (2017), Alec received 3rd prize in the GFA International Concert Artist Competition.

In the fall of 2017, Alec will begin studying with Judicaël Perroy at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.

Berta Rojas - Opening Concert (PCGS)

Location: Philadelphia Episcopal Cathedral, 23 S 38th St, Philadelphia, PA 19104, USA

Berta Rojas ranks among today’s foremost classical guitarists. She has been praised as “guitarist extraordinaire” by the Washington Post and by Classical Guitar Magazine as “Ambassador of the classical guitar.”

Berta has been nominated three times for Latin Grammy Awards; in the category of Best Instrumental Album for Día y Medio - A Day and a Half, a duet with Paquito D' Rivera (2012), in the category of Best Classical Album, for her album Salsa Roja (2014), and more recently in the category of Best Tango Album, for her album History of Tango (2015), recorded with the Camerata Bariloche.

Berta’s acknowledged warmth and musicality have earned her the admiration of audiences at major venues worldwide: the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall and the Frederick P. Rose Hall of Jazz at the Lincoln Center, in New York, London’s South Bank Centre, the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., the National Concert Hall in Dublin, where she performed as a soloist with the Irish Radio and Television Orchestra, and the Flagey Studio 4 in Brussels, where she performed with the Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra for Belgian National Television.

In 2011, with guest Paquito D’Rivera, Berta initiated the four-year tour “In the Footsteps of Mangoré” which followed the travels of Agustín Barrios, pioneer of the classical guitar in the Americas. The duo performed in 20 Latin American and Caribbean countries, concluding the journey at the national theater of the capital of El Salvador, final resting place of the celebrated composer.

Berta takes her audience on a colorful journey of sound, embracing new works by composers in diverse genres. The journey is echoed in recordings such as Cielo Abierto (2006) and Terruño (2009), as well as the duo with Carlos Barbosa-Lima on Alma y Corazón (2007) and the celebrated Intimate Barrios (2008) featuring works by the great Paraguayan composer and guitarist. On her latest recording, Felicidade (2017), she pays tribute to Brazilian music, with guest artists including Gilberto Gil, Toquinho and Ivan Lins.

In addition to continually enriching her own career through international tours and master classes, Berta Rojas is firmly committed to furthering and disseminating the classical guitar. A particular focus is on promoting the music of her country, Paraguay, as well as Latin American music more widely, and her ongoing support for the careers of young, upcoming guitarists. With this aim, she created the first online classical guitar competition, the Barrios World Wide Web Competition, in 2009, and was the Artistic Director of the Ibero-American Guitar Festival at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington D.C.

She also co-founded the young persons' Beatty Music Scholarship Competition for Classical Guitar, offering winners the opportunity to perform at the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. After initial studies in her native Paraguay with Felipe Sosa and Violeta de Mestral, Berta studied in Uruguay under Abel Carlevaro, Eduardo Fernández and Mario Payseé, and at the USA's Peabody Institute under Manuel Barrueco, Ray Chester and Julian Gray.

She has recently joined the prestigious Berklee College of Music as Associate Professor, sharing her knowledge and love of music with a select group of young guitarists from all over the world.

Berta Rojas has been ranked amongst the most influential women in the Hispanic world (EFE and EsGlobal 2014; 2017). She has been named a Fellow of the Americas by the US Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts for her artistic excellence, and honored by her country with the title Illlustrious Ambassador of Musical Art. In 2015 she was awarded the National Order of Merit of the Comuneros, and the title of Doctor honoris causa by two national universities. In 2017, in recognition of her outstanding contribution to culture, she received both the National Order of Merit Don José Falcón and the Carlos Colombino Award.

Over half a century after walking onto the world stage as the first classical guitar quartet, The Romeros continue to be a veritable institution in the world of classical music, dazzling countless audiences and winning the raves of reviewers worldwide.

Known to millions as “The Royal Family of the Guitar,” the Romeros were founded by the legendary Celedonio Romero with his sons Celin, Pepe and Angel in 1958. The Quartet went through natural transformations, and today consists of the second (Celin & Pepe) and third generations (Lito & Celino). To have so many virtuosi of the same instrument in one family is unique in the world of musical performance, and in the realm of the classical guitar it is absolutely without precedent.

Celebrating their fifty-fifth anniversary in 2018-19, the season will include tours in Asia, Europe, South America and the United States. The Romeros will also be presenting special concerts and festivals in memory of the 100th anniversary of patriarch Celedonio Romero, including a performance in their birth city of Málaga, Spain.
