World-class Classical Guitar in Wilmington, Delaware

Wilmington Classical Guitar Season 2017-18!

Well, it took a bit of doing, and up until a few weeks ago there were still some pieces up in the air, but it looks like everything is falling neatly into place and we’re going to have an amazing 2017-18 season (including 3 free concerts)!

WCGS Members Showcase

WCGS Members Showcase Date: September 23, 2017
Time: 1:00 pm (doors open at 12:30 pm)
Venue: Old Town Hall, 510 N Market St, Wilmington, DE 19801
Admission: FREE!

The season will begin with our second annual WCGS Members Showcase concert. The Members Showcase features professional and amateur members of the guitar society, and is our way of introducing ourselves and the classical guitar to more of the Wilmington community. This year’s showcase, presented with the the Delaware Historical Society, will be held in Wilmington’s Old Town Hall, a building that dates back to 1798! The colonial interior is beautiful and takes you back to those heady times before electricity. It’s really a stunning space, and I personally can’t wait to perform there.

Meng Su with special guest Phillip Smith

Meng Su Date: October 21, 2017
Time: 7:30 pm (doors open at 7:00 pm)
Venue: Presbyterian Church of the Covenant, 503 Duncan Rd., Wilmington, DE 19809
Admission: $20 General Admission / $15 Senior, Student / $10 WCGS & PCGS Members

Chinese guitarist Meng Su has been making her mark on the music scene in the past several years, as a duo artist with Yameng Wang in the Beijing Guitar Duo, as a trio artist with Yawei and Manuel Barrueco, and most recently as a solo artist. Meng recently won the highly competitive Christopher Parkening Competition – one of the most prestigious guitar competitions in the world – and followed that with the release of her first solo album, which is receiving rave reviews. Don’t miss this chance to see Meng in this very rare solo appearance. She might just bring down the house.

Boyd Meets Girl with special guest Luke Honer

Boyd Meets Girl Date: November 18, 2017
Time: 7:30 pm (doors open at 7:00 pm)
Venue: Presbyterian Church of the Covenant, 503 Duncan Rd., Wilmington, DE 19809
Admission: $20 General Admission / $15 Senior, Student / $10 WCGS & PCGS Members

Australian guitarist Rupert Boyd gave an amazing performance for us at World Cafe Live during our 2015-16 season, and he’s returning this time with reinforcements! Boyd Meets Girl pairs Rupert with the amazing cellist Laura Metcalf (of Sybarite5). Hot on the heels of the release of their first album, Boyd Meets Girl is geared up to put on an amazing performance of pieces written and arranged for classical guitar and cello. You will not want to miss this unique combination (one of my favorites), or their incomparable artistry. Rupert and Laura will also be giving a masterclass the day of the concert at Presbyterian Church of the Covenant.

Xiaobo Pu and Emma Resmini, flute

Xiaobo Pu and Emma Resmini Date: February 24, 2018
Time: 7:30 pm (doors open at 7:00 pm)
Venue: Presbyterian Church of the Covenant, 503 Duncan Rd., Wilmington, DE 19809
Admission: $15 General Admission / $10 Senior, Student and WCGS & PCGS Members

Chinese guitarist Xiaobo Pu and American flutist Emma Resmini put on a breathtaking performance opening for Colin Davin in our 2016-17 season, and they return this season with a full concert program. Xiaobo will perform one half of the program solo, and play flute & guitar duos with the talented Emma Resmini during the other half. Both Xiaobo and Emma are students completing degrees at Curtis Institute of Music.

Young Ik Jang with special guest Benjamin Pasternak

Young Ik Jang Date: March 24, 2018

Born in Korea, Young Ik Jang is currently a doctoral student with Julian Gray at Shenandoah University. Among other recent accomplishments, Jang recently took home second place in the prestigious Schadt String Competition (WCGS 2016-17 artist Alec Holcomb took 3rd). Jang’s program will include solo works, as well as the first concerto we’ll have the pleasure of presenting, accompanied by piano.

GFA Winner’s Tour
Xavier Jara with special guest Andrew DiGiandomenico

Xavier Jara Date: April 21, 2018
Time: 8:00 pm (doors open at 7:30 pm)
Venue: Gore Recital Hall, Roselle Center for the Arts, University of Delaware, 110 Orchard Rd., Newark, DE, 19716
Admission: FREE!

The GFA International Concert Artist Competition attracts the very best musicians from around the world, and the winner’s tour concert is always the highlight of our season. Thanks to the generous help of the University of Delaware, we are able to offer this year’s winner’s tour concert free to the public! Last year’s competition winner, Xavier Jara, hails from Minnesota, and is the first winner from the United States since Martha Master’s won in 2000. Xavier has been studying with Judicael Perroy, and is yet another example of the incredible artistry emerging from his French studio (last year’s GFA touring artist, 2016 GFA winner Thibaut Garcia, also studied with Judicael). In addition to giving a masterclass at the University of Delaware the same day as the concert, we’ll be presenting a masterclass with Xavier at Presbyterian Church of the Covenant on 4/20.

6th Annual WCGS Members Concert

WCGS Members Concert Date: May 26, 2018
Time: 7:30 pm (doors open at 7:00 pm)
Venue: Presbyterian Church of the Covenant, 503 Duncan Rd., Wilmington, DE 19809
Admission: FREE!

The annual WCGS Members Concert is always one of my favorites – a time for our members to put forth their very best performances, and they never disappoint. As always, the Members Concert will feature professional and amateur members of the guitar society and showcase some of the incredible talents we are so fortunate to have in our midst.

Best wishes, and I look forward to seeing you at a concert,
Matthew Lavanish
