    The Wilmington Classical Guitar Society is proud to present guitarist/composer and 2015 Delaware Division of the Arts Fellowship award winner Kevin Cope. Join us for an evening of original compositions for classical guitar by Cope, including works for solo guitar, duos with clarinet and classical guitar, and a trio with soprano and percussion.

    Featured guest artists will include Brendan Evans, guitar, Adrienne Harding, flute, Christopher Nichols, clarinet, Rachel Lipson, soprano, and Benjamin Goldman, darbuka.

    Bio:
    Kevin J. Cope is a graduate of the University of Delaware with a master’s degree in music composition and a second master’s degree in guitar performance. He has studied with composers Patrick Long, Jennifer Barker, and Andrew Bleckner, and guitarists Matthew Slotkin and Christiaan Taggart. Often leaning toward a dark character, his composition style ranges from tonal to atonal with a wide range in between. Among his favorite tools is mixing Arabian modes with Western theory to create unique harmonies and melodic structures. (more…)

    Bio:
    A native of West Chester, Pennsylvania, Jeremy Lyons began studying the classical guitar at a young age with his father Glenn Lyons, who is the professor of classical guitar at West Chester University of Pennsylvania. Along with the guitar, Jeremy studied the cello growing up with Ovidiu Marinescu, who is a professor of cello and orchestral conductor at West Chester University of Pennsylvania. (more…)

    Convention Report – 2015 GFA Convention and Competition

    Oklahoma City University
    The Guitar Foundation of America (GFA) held its 2015 Convention and Competition at Oklahoma City University (OCU) from June 23rd-28th. The five day long convention had many activities for its attendants including concerts, lessons, master classes, technique workshops, lectures, and a large vendor fair with everything from guitars to sheet music and accessories. Also taking place throughout the week was GFA’s International Concert Artist Competition. The 1st prizewinner at the GFA competition receives a fifty-concert tour across North America, a publication with Mel Bay, recordings with Naxos and GHA Records as well as various other prizes from GFA sponsors. This year’s winner was Thibaut Garcia of France.

    The Wilmington Classical Guitar Society is proud to present Ukrainian guitarist and 2012 PCGS Guitar Competition winner Nikolay Gavlishin. Join us at the Music School of Delaware on Thursday, June 4 when Nikolay will perform a captivating program of beautiful and seldom-heard classical guitar music, including works by Albéniz, Vassiliev, Sculthorpe, Barrios, Piazzolla and Rudnev.

    Bio:
    Winner of the 2012 Philadelphia Classical Guitar Society Competition and recipient of West Chester University’s Sophomore Instrumental Scholarship, Nikolay Gavlishin is an experienced musician who strives to make each note both personal and captivating. Nikolay has a Bachelor’s in Guitar Performance and Music Education from West Chester University where he was the president of the WCU Guitar Ensemble. He has performed as a soloist at the Philadelphia Classical Guitar Society, the Philadelphia Guitar Summit, and the Dr. Sandra F. Pritchard Mather Planetarium. He actively performs and teaches in the West Chester and Philadelphia areas.

    The Wilmington Classical Guitar Society is pleased to bring the Guitar Foundation of America International Concert Artist Competition Winner Tour to Delaware for the first time ever! The prestigious GFA Competition is known throughout the world for drawing the most talented competitors and winning the competition is a coveted milestone in the careers of many young artists. Don’t miss your chance to see this world-class artist!

    Russian guitarist Anton Baranov is a prizewinner of more then fifteen prestigious international guitar competitions, including the Koblenz Guitar Competition, Andrés Segovia Competition, Agustín Barrios Competition, Robert Vidal Competition, and Pittaluga Guitar Competition. At the height of his young career, he won both the Guitar Foundation of America International Concert Artist Competition and the Francisco Tárrega Competition in 2013.

    Known for his daring interpretation and innovative programming, guitarist and composer Roland Dyens calls him, “a real musician, one of those rare guitarists who are able to have their attendees almost forget the instrument they play, managing to have them focus on the expressivity of the music and only this.”

    As part of his prize from winning the GFA competition, Mr. Baranov will embark on a 50-city concert tour throughout the United States, Mexico, Canada, and Brazil, and has just recorded his first album on the Naxos label. Mr. Baranov has been a D’Addario artist since 2013. He currently teaches at his alma mater, the St. Petersburg Conservatory.

    Opening Artist: Jiyeon Kim, 22, from Seoul, entered the Curtis Institute of Music in 2011 and studies with renowned guitarists David Starobin and Jason Vieaux. Ms. Kim is the John J. Medveckis Annual Fellow at Curtis.

    Baranov Bio Continued:
    Anton Baranov was born in 1984 and started playing guitar at the age of ten. He completed his musical education at the oldest and most famous Russian school of music, the Saint-Petersburg State Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory, where he has had a teaching position since his graduation in 2010. Mr. Baranov has been a D’ Addario artist since 2013 and plays a Sakurai – Kohno guitar. (more…)
