Kevin J. Cope is a graduate of the University of Delaware with a master’s degree in music composition and a second master’s degree in guitar performance. He has studied with composers Patrick Long, Jennifer Barker, and Andrew Bleckner, and guitarists Matthew Slotkin and Christiaan Taggart. Often leaning toward a dark character, his composition style ranges from tonal to atonal with a wide range in between. Among his favorite tools is mixing Arabian modes with Western theory to create unique harmonies and melodic structures.

Kevin writes for any instrumentation and has received commissions for many ensembles including horn octet, guitar ensemble (Salisbury Guitar Festival), choir, woodwind quintet, chamber ensembles, and concert band. Solo and duet commissions have also been completed including works for guitar, flute and guitar, tenor and piano, saxophone and guitar (Duo Montagnard), and guitar duo (Duo Cortado).

Kevin was the recipient of the 2011 Emerging Artist Fellowship for Music Composition and the 2015 Established Professional Fellowship for Music Composition from the Delaware Division of the Arts and has also been featured on the cover of Soundboard Magazine in their 40th Anniversary Edition with a focus on composition for the guitar (see below). The issue also includes two movements from his Suite No. 2 for solo guitar.

Currently the president of the Philadelphia Classical Guitar Society, and a member of the board of directors for Orchestra 2001, Kevin continues to work to enhance the influence the classical guitar and contemporary art music in the Philadelphia area.
